Are You Really Ready To Return To Sport After Injury? Here’s How To Know!

St. Petersburg Experts Explain When Your Ready To Return To Sport After Injury

You finished physical therapy, the pain is gone, and you’re eager to get back to your sport. But are you actually ready?

At Alliance Regen & Rehab in St. Petersburg and Tampa, we work with athletes every day who are cleared to return—but aren’t truly prepared for the demands of their sport. Returning too early or without a proper re-entry plan can put you at high risk for re-injury, poor performance, or even chronic pain.

In this article, Dr. Dennis Colón, DPT (shoulder and elbow specialist) and Dr. Brian Broussard, DPT (running injury specialist) break down the key indicators, tests, and red flags that tell us whether an athlete is genuinely ready to return to sport.

The Alliance Rx Injury Roadmap for overcoming injury

Pain Free Does Not Equal Performance Ready

Dr. Colón explains:
“Just because pain is gone doesn’t mean you’re ready. Rehab needs to go beyond getting out of pain—we’re looking at movement quality, tissue capacity, and game-level readiness.”

This is especially important for throwing athletes, runners, lifters, and anyone returning from:

  • ACL surgery or knee injuries
  • Rotator cuff or labral injuries
  • Hamstring, quad, or groin strains
  • Lower back or shoulder instability
  • Post-op procedures with mobility or strength loss
  • Running injuries like tendonitis and meniscus tears

Return To Sport After Injury: 5 Signs You're Really Ready

At Alliance, we follow a performance-based return-to-play model. Here’s what we’re looking for before you hit the field, court, or gym:

1. Strength Symmetry: The 90% Rule

One of the most important benchmarks for return-to-sport readiness is strength balance between sides. Research shows athletes who return with less than 90% limb symmetry are at a much higher risk of re-injury. That means if your injured leg or arm is even just 15-20% weaker than the other, you’re not just behind—you’re vulnerable.

At Alliance, we use handheld dynamometry and functional strength tests to measure this objectively. It’s not about guessing or “feeling ready”—it’s about data. When your injured side shows at least 90% of your healthy side’s strength, we know you’re closer to safe performance.

“If you’re 60–70% strong compared to your other leg or arm, you’re also 30-40% weaker.” — Dr. Broussard, DPT

2. Movement QUALITY, Not Just Quantity

Being able to do reps or run a set distance isn’t enough—you need to move with control, speed, and resilience. We look at movement under stress and under different variables, because real movement is unpredictable and you usually don’t have time to worry about form or perfection.

Our team of sports physical therapists analyzes:

  • Landing mechanics after jumps or hops

  • Rotational control in the trunk and hips

  • Deceleration patterns when stopping, cutting, or changing direction

  • Unilateral balance and power (because sport is rarely symmetrical)

  • Lifting, throwing, and running mechanics

If you can move with quality under both load and fatigue, you’re setting yourself up for success.

3. Sport Specific Demands Met In Clinic First

“Before you sprint, cut, pitch, or swing—your body should handle those same forces safely in rehab,” says Dr. Colón.

Here’s a mistake we see all the time (not those that come to alliance): an athlete finishes rehab, never did return to sport testing, skips straight to practice, and re-injures within weeks. Why? Because they never trained sport-specific demands in the clinic first.

Examples:

  • A pitcher should complete a progressive interval throwing program with zero setbacks before game action.

  • A soccer player should decelerate, cut, and sprint laterally in rehab before hitting the field.

  • A weightlifter must regain bracing, core control, and confidence in front-loaded positions before loading the bar heavy.

  • A runner should be able to perform plyometrics, control single leg movements, do elliptical, stairs, and even biking first, and then go through a return to running progression.

At Alliance, we make sure these demands are trained, tested, and passed in the clinic before you step back onto the field, track, or platform.

4. Confidence and Control

The body may be healed, but if the mind isn’t ready, performance suffers—and risk skyrockets. Fear of movement, hesitation when decelerating, or even subtle doubt in your ability to cut, jump, or swing are all red flags.

Our rehab model addresses both physical and psychological readiness. Through gradual exposure to challenging drills, simulated game scenarios, and constant feedback, athletes regain confidence alongside strength. This type of training is called reactive neuromuscular training and we implement it with every patient we see! If you’re still hesitant, you’re not ready—and we’d rather take one more week than risk one more season.

5. Objective Testing VALD or Performance Screening

At Alliance, we use tools like VALD technology to remove the guesswork. These tools allow us to measure power output, side-to-side asymmetry, and fatigue tolerance with precision.

This means your return isn’t based on “how it feels” but on data, movement analysis, and performance-driven rehab progression. That’s how professional athletes are cleared to return—and it’s how we treat every athlete in St. Petersburg and Tampa.

“Return to sport isn’t a feeling—it’s a decision made from data, movement analysis, and high-level rehab progression.” — Dr. Broussard, DPT

When Not To Return Yet

❌ You’re pain-free but still compensating with movement
❌ You haven’t trained with controlled intensity or fatigue
❌ You feel hesitation, especially during sport-specific drills
❌ You haven’t been tested with dynamometer, hopping, or running screens

So What Should You Do?

✔ Get a formal return-to-play screen
✔ Work with a rehab team that combines sports performance + clinical care
✔ Gradually reintroduce skill work, volume, and reactive drills
✔ Address fear, mental blocks, and conditioning gaps

Why It Matters

Too many athletes go from rehab straight into competition.  Or worse, they wait it out until they don’t feel it anymore and then try to go back into what was causing pain. Some people with injuries also try some exercises and “rehab” on google hoping that will be enough. We help you close that gap that’s 100% present in either of those scenarios. At Alliance Regen & Rehab, we don’t just deal with getting you past injuries— we prepare you for performance.

With the combined expertise of Dr. Dennis Colón, PT, DPT (shoulder & elbow) and Dr. Brian Broussard, DPT (hip & knee), we tailor return-to-play protocols to your sport, movement patterns, and performance goals.
