Imagine this…. You’re on a Par 5 and you smoke your drive, you set up your second shot and you’re just imagining a beautiful second shot.
You take your backswing and initiate the downswing…
And you hit it thin…. The ball just skips down the fairway or possibly into the bunker and you’re wondering why this happens (why does it happen so much to me?)
What if I told you this can be fixed and it has something to do with both your swing and your golf fitness.
Early extension happens quite often in amateur golfers and even those who have been playing for years!
Early Extension – excessive and early movement of the pelvis towards the ball during the golf swing.
Some golfers who experience this swing flaw commonly complain of the following…
- Feeling like they run of space for their hands.
- Lower back pain in the middle or end of the round.
- Constant issues with slicing right or thinning the top.
All of the issues happen at the same time and can be a killer for your golf game!

Take a look at the setup position. Imagine drawing a line from the back most part of his glute all the way down towards the ground. If you were to take a video of DJ’s swing, his hip would never come off of that line during his swing! It’s almost as if he’s sitting down as he begins his transition from backswing to downswing!
The reason why he’s doing that is to create power from the ground up, create tension through his body, and to create this centripetal acceleration with the club – resulting in smashing the ball!
Well DJ’s a pro, so duh! Of course, he can do that. You can too, but it just takes some re-wiring, some stability work, and potentially some improvements with flexibility!
One great exercise to improve this ability to stay in your posture is performing a Kettlebell RDL! Check out the video below!!
If you’re someone who thinks they may be standing up a little too early in that golf swing of yours, is dealing with some lower back tightness, or is just interested in improving mobility, we have the perfect place to start!
